America the 1980th. Provincial businessman Richard Dane (Michael K. The hall) wakes up in the middle of the night and realizes that someone broke into his house. Shivering hands it charges the fatherly gun, passes on a corridor in search of the criminal and, having seen it, almost at once shoots. The criminal falls as knocked down. The policemen who have arrived on a call explain to the man that it had full authority to use the weapon and that the person killed by it – the being wanted bandit. Dane, however, does not feel a hero. He suffers a remorse, and to them the deadly horror when the father of the robber Ben Rassell appears in the district (Sam Shepard whom it is transparent is added hints Richard that in revenge will be quit with his family.
The first thriller in creativity of the independent director Jim Mikl who was earlier working over low budget horrors, begins excellently, almost ideally. Rarely the American picture shows justifiable murder as an event which is not forgotten this second, and heavy cargo lays down on conscience of the peace person, hardly able to shoot!

Certainly, neighbors and policemen as the real Americans, celebrate Richard as the hero. But the man perfectly realizes that took away another’s life. And its mental anguish doubles and trebles, when it appears that now danger threatens his family and that Ben Rassell – not the helpless old man, and the severe criminal at whom in life remained nothing, except thirst of revenge. Powerful psychologism, realistic action, bright actors, the dense atmosphere of thrillers of the 1980th (disturbing sintezatorny music of a picture is inspired by a soundtrack of "Halloween" and John Carpenter’s other tapes) … A magnificent beginning for fascinating cinema!

Then, however, there is something strange and ridiculous. The tape put on the novel of the genre writer and screenwriter Joe Lansdeyla, does at first one, and then other sharp subject turn, and centrifugal force shakes out from a picture all good that there it was necessary the first minutes of the film. First of all, Dane is pushed aside on the second subject plan. It so is not becomes important for a narration that it is possible to explain its participation in the culmination only to that Michael K. The hall was signed to play the protagonist, instead of the character running from action in the middle of the film. Any other, internal reasons at Richard to participate in the ending is not present. But it has pieces ten weighty reasons to keep from the events far away and some possibilities to rectify situation so that anybody from people dear to it with guarantee did not suffer.
Further, the film forgets about how it is morally difficult to the protagonist to kill the person, and turns Dane into an action hero – not being protected, and attacking those who at all does not know about its existence. It simply spittle in soul that who was delighted was that «The cold in July» will appear a variation on "Crime and punishment" subjects, instead of the flat thriller fighter with an unpretentious action. Also the picture absolutely rejects realism and tries to convince the audience that (attention, a spoiler!) the police will cover the serial murderer in gratitude that it gave evidences against a mafia. Yes, the American authorities a lot of things can forgive to the person, concordant to become the witness against an influential gang. But nevertheless not the serial murders made after the contract with the prosecutor. And not in that case when the murderer already gave evidences and settled the utility for court.
