End of the 1980th. Sworn brothers Sonni (Justin Chong) and Stephen (Kevin Wu) children come from China to New York and get to the world where their destiny excites nobody and does not interest. Soon they become members of a ruthless youth gang «Green dragons» which under the direction of artful and charismatic Paul Wong (Harry Shum younger) turns into one of leading groups of the area Flushing, new New York Chaynataun. In the course of time guys grow in the most true and reliable members of a gang but when circumstances develop against them, Paul decides that is not obliged to love on devotion.
In the 2006th Martin Scorsese let out "Turncoats", a remake of the Hong Kong criminal drama «Double castling», and this picture brought to the American classic long-awaited director’s "Oscar". Celebrating Scorsese’s success, the western press, in our opinion, insufficiently often reminded public that the master only cloned one of the best Far East genre statements. However the cat perfectly knew, whose meat ate, and in gratitude to the coproducer of "Castling" Andrew Lau Scorsese спродюсировал his first English-speaking film with the Chinese actors in leading roles (Lau debuted in Hollywood with the thriller "Flock" where played Richard Gere, Clare Deyns and other western celebrities).
Unfortunately, loud names in a caption do not guarantee art success of the film. And though in team of "Dragons" play not only Lau and Scorsese and it is not fabricated, and partly real history about an original New York gang, the picture does not impress, and disappoints.
Detective Tanga in a picture plays MC Jin – the first American rapper of the Chinese origin who has signed the contract with a large musical label
However, if you collect criminal dramas about ethnic groups in America, "Dragons" quite can притулиться in a corner in one room with all "Godfathers" and «Once in America». Lau’s picture is picturesque, cruel and realistic, and, unlike many Hollywood tapes, the Chinese bandits appear in it not as mysterious philosophers and masters of a rukonozhestvo and a drygomashestvo, and normal, clear street muggers who kill knifes and bullets, instead of in blows on secret points. Clearly, sometimes they break on pathos of the millennia, and they eat with sticks, instead of forks. But generally – bandit wasps as bandit wasps, just "Abibas" do not carry. And, you see, the sharp eyes from within are always more interesting than culture, than a respectful blank look outside, typical for the American images of Chinese.
Playing the film the head of the Chinese criminal syndicate Yudzheny Yuan there was one of the best rhythmic gymnasts of the USA
On the other hand, it is enough to spit only towards Hong Kong to get in any of numerous rather realistic Chinese youth and criminal dramas. So in this plan "Dragons" are not unique, and the image of Chinese in America, instead of in China – a bonus for western, instead of for the Russian viewer. When you start to estimate the film not as an ethnographic sketch and as art cinema, at once you notice exuding with stamps and only occasionally a fascinating plot, the sad romantic line (Sonni falls in love with the girl who is sponsored by Paul because her brother saved to it life), dreadful dialogues, a ridiculous abundance of slow-motion shots, cardboard and flat minor characters … And that worst of all, spiritually weak and passive in the most part of the film of protagonists.
Yes, when you see the children, compelled to become gangsters though their hearts to it do not lie, such characters cause at once sympathy and sympathy. Especially when the boss starts to send still little brothers on mortally dangerous adult "missions". But the American criminal cinema is arranged not how more noble genres, and in it resolute and enterprising heroes like Michael Corleone and Tony Montany use spectator respect, even when behave as ruthless psychopaths. Tyuti like Sonni and Stephen look as suckers, and to watch their life much less interesting.
