Where the known in 1990th British and Hollywood director, the director of such pictures how «Leaving Las Vegas», «Appointment for one night» and "Time code" was gone? If not to consider its periodic work on series (in particular, it removed one of series «Soprano Clan»), it is possible to tell that Mike Figgis went to a deep underground. So deep that details about his last pictures are difficult for finding even in the all-knowing Internet.
Played the heroine by name of Clare actress Aemilia Fox is known in Britain on a role in long-term police series "Dumb Witness"
When you read a synopsis «On the verge of doubt», apparently, that the British at last got out of an underground, exhaled that he smoked in recent years, and returned to creation of fascinating tapes. Detective investigation, intelligent characters, seductive women, gloomy family secrets – all these standard, but qualitative components for the erotic thriller, and many directors would cook from them quite edible soup. Figgis, however, quickly shows that it is not interesting to it to feed the audience with an entertaining show. Instead of the thriller it removed something chaotic, pretentious, awkwardly making advances to a postmodernism (on an action course Martin and his students discuss scenary courses of a narration) and often showing to public indecent gesture. «You thought, what this scene will interestingly end or what that sequence of events will pour out in something remarkable? Hold a pocket more widely! It is an art house, instead of a mainstream!»
Mike Figgis – not only the director and the screenwriter «On the verge of doubt», but also the director of photography, the film editor, the composer and the executive producer
At the very end of a picture the protagonist notices that life does not keep within a framework of standard plots. Really, the storyteller telling real or realistic story, is not obliged to adjust it to genre templates. But he all the same should tell interestingly that the audience was not bored to death. At least, it should force to empathize public to characters. Figgis does not achieve even it. Who killed, whom killed, whether there was in general a crime where the wife who has gone many years ago of Martin and Sara’s mother got to … Any of these questions will not grasp you, because the director so built and so shot a picture that destiny of characters, their past and the future you is not mentioned absolutely not. It is intellectual, emotionally. No less than Figgis’s attempts on post-modernist wit.
